Frisian Language

Many of the inhabitants of Föhr and Amrum speak Frisian. The Frisian dialect spoken on Föhr is called “Fering”, the dialect spoken on Amrum is known as “Öömrang”.

This is an audio example from the year 1959. You can also read along here. (The Frisian text starts in the second paragraph.)

The Ferring Foundation does its best to support the Frisian language. The Foundation funds Frisian dictionaries, helps to organise Frisian classes at the local schools and awards scholarships to students who study Frisian.

The Foundation also collects and preserves Frisian texts, especially those that are handwritten or no longer available in print.
